In the Holy Spirit, God has provided guidance and all Christians need to overcome temptation. Proper relationship to the Holy Spirit guarantees not only these things but joy and assurance as well.

V. THE VINDICATION OF GOD’S RIGHTEOUSNESS (CHAPTERS 9–11)

A major problem concerning God’s righteousness arises out of what Paul just claimed for God: If God is for His elect and will never remove His love from them, why has He set aside His chosen people, the Jews? It certainly looks as though something separated them from His love. If God has turned away from Israel, are Christians really that secure?

In Romans 9–11 the apostle defended the righteousness of God in His dealings with Israel. Having explained how God saves sinners Paul now found it necessary to “justify” God Himself, to prove and declare Him righteous. God’s present dealings with Israel do not indicate that He has abandoned the Jews. But God’s ways need viewing in the light of His future plans for them. In the future God will glorify Israel. The whole section dealing with Israel culminates in rapturous praise to God (11:33–36), much as the section on individual salvation (3:21–8:39) ends with praise (8:31–39).
